How to Stay Safe During a Power Outage
Richmond residents preparing for BC Hydro’s scheduled overnight outage on Sunday, October 25, should get ready before electricity is cut at 9 p.m. Charge mobile phones and other essential devices, fully power up portable chargers, and keep flashlights and spare batteries nearby. Using flashlights instead of candles can also help reduce the risk of a fire.
While the power is out, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut to keep food cold for as long as possible. Unplug sensitive electronics to reduce the risk of damage from power surges when electricity returns. Anyone who depends on powered medical equipment should arrange backup electricity or another safe alternative in advance.
Be cautious when travelling through affected neighbourhoods, as some traffic lights may stop working. Approach dark intersections carefully, treat them as all-way stops and watch for pedestrians. Never operate fuel-powered generators, barbecues or camping stoves inside a home or enclosed space because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
After power is restored, check essential appliances and reconnect electronics carefully. Residents can visit BC Hydro’s outage map for updates on the scheduled outage and any changes to the restoration time.
