If you’ve been in west Richmond recently, you may have noticed a particularly bad smell lingering in the air. According to locals, the area has smelled like raw sewage over the past few weeks, leading to constant nausea and recommendations to close the windows from neighbours.

Unpleasant Smells in West Richmond

If you live in west Richmond, then you probably already know all about that recent rancid smell that’s been permeating throughout the city.

But if you’re not a local, public web app Smell Vancouver (also known as SmellVan) can give you a good idea as to how often Richmond residents are smelling that terrible scent. The app allows users to submit odour reports for the greater Vancouver area, highlighting where certain stinks are in each municipality.

One look at SmellVan’s map will show you that most reports are concentrated in the western neighbourhoods. A fair number note that the smells are extremely offensive, and use descriptors like “sewage”, “rotting eggs”, and “decaying animal”. Some symptoms also include nausea, vomiting, headache, and sleep disturbance.

While residents have been wondering online where the smell is coming from, Metro Vancouver Regional District has offered an explanation. In a social post, they wrote,

Analysis of wind data and odour observations suggest a natural source related to decomposing marine vegetation, rather than local utility operations. Wastewater treatment facilities are operating normally, and conditions are expected to improve later this autumn.
