With the rising costs in Canada, it’s no surprise to hear that some folks are cutting back to focus on the essentials. Maybe you’ve started to go out less, or perhaps you aren’t buying as many treats as you usually would. Whatever you’re cutting out, there’s most likely another Canadian doing the same thing.
We asked our audience what they have stopped buying as prices continue to soar. Get ready because it’s about to get real.
Rising Costs In Canada: What Have Canadians Stopped Buying?
Only The Essentials
One of the top answers we received was cutting out meat. Most meat, in fact– unless it’s marked down or on a huge sale, many commented that they wouldn’t purchase it. One commenter even mentioned that they fish in order to get some of their protein, as well as buying beef sides and whole chickens.

Some commenters noted that they avoided buying groceries– like fruits and vegetables– from big chain grocery stores. When possible, they would go to local farmers markets. And joining that was many mentions of not buying processed or prepacked meals.
Staying Home
Another top answer was not eating out as much– or only on special occasions. This includes fast food spots, but mostly sit-down restaurants and take-out. A commenter noted that they go around one or two times a year now; comparatively, they used to go twice a month.

A fair number of commenters also said that they’ve begun to cook more often at home. While they hunt for bargains at grocery stores– like Costco and Walmart– they bring it all home and stretch it out with some home-cooked meals. Making things from scratch was also a popular answer, including things like bread, cookies, rolls, and cakes.
The Highlight Answers Of Rising Costs In Canada
And, of course, plenty of people had some interesting, not-so-common answers to the question. One commenter said “Canada. I’ve cut out Canada”, which might not be as far-fetched an answer as you may think. B.C. has had one of the highest departure numbers in Canada this year, giving some definite truth to the commenter’s answer.

“I’ve stopped buying tums. Take heart burn like a champ,” said a commenter. Another said, “Seriously… do you want a list??”
And finally, another top answer: “Everything.”
In conclusion, the rising costs in Canada are getting out of hand, meat is way too pricey, and eating out is a total money siphon. Hopefully, things will begin to look up in 2026, but you may still have to pinch pennies and hold onto your wallet tightly.
What have you been cutting out of your budget– if at all?
