B.C. could be in for an unusually warm winter as a “super” El Niño rolls through the Northern Hemisphere. According to the U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it “continues to strengthen, with a strong-to-very strong El Niño likely through January-March 2027.”
A strong El Niño will be a major influence on the incoming winter, making the season warmer than you’re used to.

B.C. Winter Forecast
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s seasonal forecast prediction looks warm across the board. From October to December, practically the entire country is expected to experience above normal temperatures through the fall and beginning of winter.

As for Vancouver, Environment Canada is predicting an 80% chance that temperatures will hover above normal. This means winter conditions could be delayed as the El Niño tilts the weather to warmer than usual.
But winter will arrive, whether you want it to or not. The Farmer’s Almanac notes B.C. could see mild and wet conditions. The majority of southern Canada may not see its usual cold winter weather, although a broad stretch of central Canada will see chilly conditions.

Notably, skiers and snowboarders may be disappointed about this year’s snowfall as below-normal snowfall is favoured for B.C. due to temperatures hovering above normal.
Of course, just because it may be a warmer-than-usual winter doesn’t mean it’s not going to be cold. A Canadian winter still calls for bundling up, so be sure to prepare for the relatively chillier months ahead!
