Sitting at the heart of the Cascade Mountains, E.C. Manning Provincial Park (or just Manning Park, for short) is a mere three-hour drive from either the Lower Mainland or the Okanagan. It’s a popular spot for backcountry camping, with a total of 10 backcountry campgrounds and 55 campsites.

Campers report seeing shadowy figures and hearing eerie voices that echo off trees while camping after dark in the park.

One of B.C.’s largest parks, Golden Ears Provincial Park is filled with three major campgrounds and a huge hiking system. There’s even horseback-riding trails, as well as Alouette Lake, which is a popular spot for swimming, boating, and fishing.

But when night falls, campers beware: Golden Ears brims with ghost stories from B.C. residents and beyond. Expect strange, unexplainable sightings and footsteps that seemingly come from nothing…

Porteau Cove Provincial Park is situated right on the water, featuring campsites that look over the Howe Sound and the mountains beyond. It’s a beautiful place for camping if you love being by the waterside.

But while the Porteau Cove campground itself isn’t haunted, Britannia Beach (which is just a short, 9-minute drive away) may be. The location’s paranormal activity is associated with the area’s mining past, where wandering campers may see spooky figures and strange voices.

Hop onto a ferry from Nanaimo or take your own boat to arrive at Newcastle Island (officially Saysutshun), located a few hundred metres offshore from Vancouver Island. The area is dominated by steep sandstone cliffs and ledges, making it a breathtaking place for any avid campers or hikers.

But according to some legends, Newcastle Island is haunted, particularly by a ghost named “Kanaka Pete.” Retellings of his ghost story speak of a violent spirit that claimed the lives of many with an axe. Campers report seeing glowing eyes and strange growls, as well as shocking drops in temperature.

Okanagan Lake offers sandy views and great swims along its blue shores. Okanagan Lake Park has plenty of campsites in the North and South; but no matter where you stay, the lake is great for cooling off in the hot summer.

Just don’t go swimming too deep… Okanagan Lake is rumoured to be the home of the legendary Ogopogo, a lake monster. Ogopogo is said to have a horse-like head and antlers, and move like a serpent beneath the shifting waves.

Sasquatch Provincial Park is located north of Harrison Hot Springs, and is known for its pockets of lakes. It’s great for all your classic camping fun, like hiking, wildlife viewing, and picnicking.

And while you’re there, you might just spot the mysterious Sasquatch. The Sasquatch may not be part of your standard ghost story, but the folklore surrounding the park makes it worth the chance to spot the legendary creature.

Kootenay Lake Provincial Park

Kootenay Lake Provincial Park is a great place to get away if you’re looking for some quiet away from the hustle and bustle of life. It has fishing, paddling, hiking, and tons of places to go biking, too.

But if you’re easily frightened, you may want to choose another location to camp. Campers report seeing strange lights over the water, with the area also being steeped in ghost legends.
