If you’ve ever had to endure long wait times in walk-in clinics in BC, you’re not alone.
New data compiled by Medimap, a company that specializes in providing patients with clinic wait-time information, shows just how long our waits are.
Data from between November 2018 and October 2019 suggest that the average wait time in BC walk-in clinics is about 50 minutes. That number is the second-highest in Canada, after Nova Scotia, which has an average wait time of around 69 minutes.
In contract, our neighbours in Alberta have an average wait time of 23 minutes, half of the average wait time in British Columbia.
On a micro-level, several cities in British Columbia made the top 10 list of Canadian cities with the longest average wait times. The top 10:
- Sidney, B.C. – 180 minutes
- Langford, B.C. – 117 minutes
- Victoria, B.C. – 92 minutes
- Morinville, Alta. – 91 minutes
- Maple Ridge, B.C. – 91 minutes
- Halifax – 91 minutes
- Nanaimo, B.C. – 82 minutes
- Williams Lake, B.C. – 80 minutes
- Kingston, Ont. – 77 minutes
- Pitt Meadows, B.C. – 75 minutes
That’s right, the average wait-time in walk-in clinics in Sidney, BC is a whopping 3 hours, which is about the length of Avengers: Endgame. (But not longer than the too-long gangster epic The Irishman.)
According to Medimap, and CTV News, several other cities in Metro Vancouver have wait-times above our provincial average:
- Coquitlam – 58 minutes
- Vancouver – 53 minutes
- Port Moody – 52 minutes
Medimap was founded in White Rock, and provides wait times to patients via an online tool, as well as a mobile app.
In other health-related news, BC Premier John Horgan recently revealed plans for a new hospital in Surrey. Additionally, Burnaby General Hospital is also expected to get $1.3 billion in improvements.
