Big city life can be draining, which is why you might want to spend a quiet summer by the lake by volunteering with BC Parks’ Backcountry Host Program.

This volunteer program offers folks a “one-of-a-kind, immersive volunteering experience in British Columbia’s backcountry.” This is your chance to escape the city and get into the wilderness for some time of nothing but nature surrounding you.

Backcountry Host Program

The Backcountry Host Program lets you stay in a backcountry cabin or yurt at a popular hiking location where you will play “an important role in enhancing the visitor experience.” Your job will be greeting park visitors and providing them with location-specific information. Depending on your location, you may also have other responsibilities.

Stays are typically one to four weeks at a time during the summer.

Currently, BC Parks is requesting applications for four locations. Those that are interested can review the information sheet and complete the application form. These are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Here’s a look at the locations you could stay and volunteer in this summer:

  • Kakwa Park
    • Kakwa Park is known for its ice-clad mountains and extensive alpine meadows, as well as having a section of the Continental Divide.
  • Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park (Cold Fish Lake Campground)
    • Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park is one of Canada’s largest parks. It has a brilliant blend of outstanding scenery and varied terrain, and offers plenty of backcountry hiking opportunities.
  • Strathcona Park (Croteau Lake)
    • Strathcona Park is B.C.’s oldest park. A rugged mountain wilderness, this park comprises more than 250,000 hectares of mountain peaks, lakes, and alpine tarns.
  • Tweedsmuir Park South (Fisheries Pool Campground)
    • Tweedsmuir Park is a fantastic place for fishers, hikers, and horseback riders. Canoers will also enjoy taking a trip down the Turner Lake Chain.

If these sound like places you want to spend your summer, then apply to be a backcountry host on BC Parks’ website today.
