Plans Cancelled For $150 Million Indoor Waterpark & Hotel Resort In Surrey

Once the talk of the town, plans to build a massive waterpark and resort in Surrey are no more.

The Jim Pattison Group first announced the Great Wolf Lodge development last year, but recently informed the City of Surrey that they are “no longer interested.”

Plans included the construction of a colossal $150-million waterpark and 400-room hotel as part of a family-centric resort.

The group originally purchased franchise rights to the The Great Wolf Lodge Hotel and Waterpark in 2004.

While there is only one location in Canada, the Niagara Falls instalment is an extremely popular tourist destination. With that in mind, details on why the group pulled out are unknown.

After abandoning Surrey plans, the developers haven’t commented on whether Squamish is a viable alternative.

‘Discussions about Great Wolf Lodge coming to B.C. can be traced back to 2015. At the time, the Squamish Chief newspaper reported that Jim Pattison Group had purchased a two-acre parcel of land in Squamish for a hotel, but required more land for the resort,” reports the Langley Times.

While Squamish was considered, there are some logistical issues with that selection.

The district already has trouble filling jobs and the demand for work would be steep. In fact, the resort alone would double the number of available hotel rooms in the area.
