Students had huge smiles, and the West Mall had huge line-ups throughout the hallways, all in celebration of the new Starbucks at SFU.
As part of a new pilot program, Starbucks at SFU is the first Starbucks in Canada to offer a Fairtrade-certified option for its handcrafted espresso beverages, in addition to an already available Fairtrade-certified, brewed coffee option.
Starbucks, one of the largest buyers of Fairtrade coffee in the world, entered into this pilot program with SFU given the university’s Fairtrade campus designation and deep commitment to ethical sourcing. The option is currently only available at some universities in the United States and the Starbucks store at SFU will be the first location in Canada to offer it.
The new Starbucks at SFU is located in the West Mall Centre and boosts 1900-square-feet. The trendy, new student space will offer:
- Community tables
- Wi-Fi, and power for mobile devices,
- Comfy indoor and patio seating.
- Open doors 7 days a week and will remain open until midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays.
The new coffee joint will hire sixteen students and SFU student-artists will be contributing to the painting of murals. This of course is bad news for the Tim Hortons on campus, but good for the students who choose it over Starbucks considering the long lines will literally be cut in half!
