What are you doing for Halloween this year?
If you’re into EDM music festivals, FreakNight is a popular choice for the party-minded in the lower mainland as the circus-themed event, annually held in Seattle, is an exciting weekend getaway that’s in another country but still close enough to home to beat the Sunday traffic. Put on by United State of Consciousness (USC), FreakNight is the largest, longest-running electronic festival in the Northwest. It will take place at Wamu Theater on October 31st and November 1st from 7:30 PM to 3:30 AM.
With regular money-making culprits like Tiesto, Gareth Emery, and Zed’s Dead, to name a few, slated to perform, here are five acts on the bill that don’t come up to Vancouver or Seattle often enough, and are definitely worth checking out!
1. Carl Cox and friends
The Carl Cox and friends stage is one for those with an interest in rave lore as Carl Cox remains one of the British legends of acid house of the 80s. This is a major deal because not only does Cox rarely make his way out to the northwest, spending his time instead spinning decks at Space Ibiza with his Revolutionary nights, but his sets are stimulating, got-to-hear-it-to-believe-it performances. 2. Monty Luke
Mentored by Detroit techno producer Carl Craig, Monty Luke’s sound is electro jack raw and eclectic. Well-known in the west coast techno scene, Monty Luke works in the underground, head and owner of the Black Catalogue imprint label. As with any disc jockey that’s spent his time digging through the crates, Monty Luke, whatever he plays, is guaranteed to put together a mix you won’t hear on every playlist ever put on Mixcloud.
Part of the Mad Decent family, Etc!Etc! (Jose Guerrero) is an LA-based producer that is one of the more prolific and widely-known acts working in moombahton and bass – explosive, high-energy BPM stuff that is perfect in a large, sweaty, dark setting.
4. Art Department
Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow, the Toronto-based powerhouse duo behind Art Department, have been rising up the house and techno ranks ever since their hit “Without You” back in 2010. Sparse basslines, and voodoo vocals – Art Development is deep house delight.
5. Dillon Francis
Got to support talented mavericks especially when they’re as comedic and rambunctious as Dillon Francis. Associated with Diplo, Martin Garrix, and Skrillex, Francis is a festival fixture of the EDM circuit, having performed at Ultra, Electric Zoo, Electric Daisy, and TomorrowWorld, to rattle off a few. Knowing how to satisfy senses and push buttons, EDM is alive, fun, and kicking with the colourful Los Angeles native behind the decks.
Freak Night is an 18+ event that will take place at Wamu Theater, 800 Occidental Ave S Seattle from Friday Oct. 31 – Saturday Nov. 1, doors open 7:30 PM – 3:30 AM.
