General Worker
General workers help with general cleaning tasks at maintenance centres. This includes:
- Plug the train into wayside power
- Clean the locomotive cab
- Remove garbage and restock
- Shut down the Genset, and the main engine.
- Go into the cars and clean the train :vacuum the cars, remove all garbage from the bins and collect and garbage from the bathrooms. All seat trays to be cleaned and windows cleaned inside the train. All washrooms cleaned and sanitized.
This is a full-time position that pays $32.39 an hour for their Prince Rupert location. General workers also get full dental and medical benefits, as well as pension plan and a ride pass.
Requirements include:
- Possess a High School Diploma
- Capable of lifting weights ranging up to 23kg (50 lbs.)
- Be flexible regarding work schedules
- Be quality and results oriented
- Able to work in a team
- Possess mechanical aptitudes (trade an asset)
Supervisor, Mechanical and Maintenance
This position is for people looking to work in the Maintenance Department, and are responsible for the maintenance and inspection of VIA Rail’s trains. Their duties include:
- Directs a team of unionized employees (trades & general workers);
- Demonstrate soft skill coaching approach being present on shopfloor to support and for the mobilisation of his team;
- Foster employee skill development and cohesive work environments for each team member;
- Organize work for employees and monitor progress throughout daily maintenance activities in collaboration with the Lead Hand;
- Oversee the onboarding process (or department transition) and ensure employees have a good understanding of the work environment, work practices, tools, and health and safety rule.
Among many others. The annual salary ranges from $92,534 to $114,307 for this full-time position in Vancouver. Applicants are required to have:
- College degree (DEC) or any other combination of studies and work experience in a relevant field;
- Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience, relevant experience in manufacturing or the transportation industry;
- Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset;
- Familiar with Transport Canada Railway regulations (asset);
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite;
- Excellent written and verbal proficiency in English
Diesel Engine Mechanic
Diesel Engine Mechanics work on carrying out preventative maintenance and executing repairs on locomotives and rolling stock. This also includes determining causes for mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic defects on trains, as well as performing the repairs and conducting inspections.
The hourly rate ranges from $37.37 to $45.08 for this full-time Vancouver position. The requirements include:
- A vocational diploma in heavy duty mechanics, diesel mechanics, automotive mechanics.
- Excellent leadership and teamwork skills
- Knowledge of air brakes
- Ability to work days, evenings, nights, week-ends and holidays
- An inter-Provincial certificate in mechanics (Red Seal) (asset)
