While it has been a long time in the making, the new Surrey LRT vehicle was on public display for the first time today.
The vehicle was unveiled at Surrey Central City Mall on Wednesday, May 2nd to showcase the new design; the display will remain at the mall until Friday, May 11th.
Previously, the city had only released renderings of the LRT system. As the first of its kind in BC, the LRT will reduce congestion, increase transit capacity and create more jobs for the region.

On Monday, April 30th, Translink CEO Kevin Desmond announced that the light rail transit lines in Surrey to Newton and Guildford will cost more than anticipated. In fact, he stated that the system will cost a staggering $1.65 billion, which is up from $1 billion in 2015.
In order to fund this increase, Metro Vancouver mayors have proposed small price hikes to transit fares and property taxes. According to the proposal, there will be a two per cent increase to transit fares, introduced over two years beginning in 2020. Council states it will amount to a 5 to 15 per cent fare increase, and $1-$3 increase to monthly passes.
