It seems that the city is receiving more and more political support in the idea of extending the Vancouver seawall two and a half kilometres west into Kitsilano. Parks board chair, Sarah Blyth believes that there’s enough momentum to make the dream into a reality. She claims that everyone seems to be really excited, and the fact that Vancouverites will be able to go from Kits Beach to Jericho beach would be really fun for the city.
Back in 2006, a parks board report claimed that purchasing land for an expansion was considered a medium priority, and since the idea has simmered down a great deal. After NPA councillor George Affleck proposed that the new seawall could be used as an alternative to a proposed bike lane on Point Grey Road, the commotion and support for the new sea wall has escalated.
Blyth also mentioned that it would be up to the parks board to make the initiative of the expansion of the seawall, and she will be putting forward a motion on the matter very soon. Blyth claims that once her staff gather information on the next steps, the next questions are what would the sea wall look like? How much would it cost, and where would we get funding for such a project? Mayor Gregor Robertson believes he knows a few people that might be able to be a donor to kickstart the seawall project.
Blyth adds that politically speaking, many people are in support of the expansion of the seawall, the next step is to see if the public is supportive and attain more details on the project.
