The end of 2017 also marks the end of listening in on first responder calls across much of the Lower Mainland. Throughout the year, the Emergency Communications for British Columbia Inc., or E-Comm, continued the switch from old analogue radios to a new encrypted system which scrambles broadcasts. The move is designed to protect sensitive information such as medical conditions and addresses as well as safeguard first responders from criminals listening in.
