Those with upcoming trips may want to keep an eye on the weather because hurricane season is here in full force, sweeping across coastlines and destroying infrastructure.

From early June to the end of November, expect potential hurricanes if you’re headed to places in the Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico as all these locations are on high alert for tropical storms that can turn into deadly hurricanes.

One such hurricane is already making its way to a popular vacation destination for many Canadians, with it expected to arrive this weekend.

Hurricane Trudy in Mexico

Hurricane Trudy is a major Category 3 hurricane that is approaching the coast of southwestern and west-central Mexico. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, it brings an increased risk of storm surge, damaging winds, and flooding rain.

“Hurricane Warnings and Watches, as well as Tropical Storm Warnings and Watches, are currently in effect for portions of the coast, and additional watches and warnings will likely be required later today or tonight,” reads a report.

The incoming rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Large swells may also lead to dangerous surf and rip current conditions.

The Storm’s Arrival

Hurricane Trudy is expected to arrive on October 17 and 18 from north of Playa San Telmo to Cabo Corrientes. It may severely disrupt many essential services. This includes transportation, power, water food and supply, emergency services, medical care, and telecommunication networks.

Those in the affected area are asked to exercise caution, as well as monitor local news and weather reports. Travellers should also follow the instructions of local authorities, including any evacuation orders. For the latest advisories, visit the U.S. National Hurricane Center here.

Hurricane Trudy follows Hurricane Simon, which swept across the west-central coast of Mexico from Punta San Telmo to San Blas on October 10.
