“Heavenly Spices brand Garlic Powder [is being] recalled due to Bacillus cereus,” the notice explained. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control notes that food poisoning caused by Bacillus cereus can lead to two different types of gastrointestinal illness. This includes emetic (vomiting) syndrome or a diarrhoeal syndrome.
“B. cereus will grow in food that has been improperly stored, therefore proper food handling, especially after cooking, will help prevent illnesses caused by this microorganism.”
Consumers with the affected product are advised to throw it out. As a Class II recall, “there is a moderate risk that consuming the food may lead to short-term or non-life threatening health problems.”
