CMHC-Granville Island has officially moved forward with a new parking system on Granville Island.
Under this new system, all parking on the Island will be free of charge in mornings and evenings. However, pay parking will be in effect for all parking stalls during the busy midday period.
Beginning on June 1, the new daily parking system will be as follows:
- Free Parking: 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m.
- Pay Parking: 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Pricing will change twice a year:
- $3/hour in summer (May 1 to September 30)
- $2/hour in winter (October 1 to April 30)
According to the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation, the new pay system will increase parking availability by 15%.
There are currently over 1,200 parking stalls on Granville Island and the area is often strangled by motorists looking for free parking. The new system only gives drivers one option and it predicts vehicle traffic will move faster across the island.
“We are implementing this new system in order to improve parking availability, better manage demand, and improve the visitor experience,” says Sebastian Lippa, Manager of Planning & Development at CMHC-Granville Island.
For drivers paying for parking, you can pay for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or in one-hour increments.
