Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have released an extensive plan to revamp the beloved Granville Island by 2040.
Granville Island 2040: Bridging Past & Future outlines a few solutions to improve the area – a hot topic of discussion in the city.
One of those changes includes building an elevator and staircase from the Granville Street bridge to the heart of of the island.
The project would cost a cool $6 million. By doing so, they’d improve access to the island and reduce vehicle traffic. One of the biggest issues Granville Island faces is traffic congestion.
In addition, they hope to build a new bridge across Alder Bay.
“This is a bold, comprehensive, long-term vision that addresses our challenges, initiates exciting new development, and fosters renewed passion for creativity and innovation,” said Evan Siddall, President & CEO, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). CMHC has managed Granville Island on behalf of the Government of Canada since its redevelopment in 1973.
The report sets out to make a number of other changes. They include:
- Improve access
- Expanding the public market and create a market district
- Establishing a new Art and Innovation Hub
- Creating a central plaza at the heart of the Island and more.
Siddall mentions that people love Granville Island as is, so there won’t be any drastic changes but just a few minor ones that will improve accessibility and boost the arts & culture scene.
