Beginning today, parking will be free at White Rock Beach, but only for a limited time.

The White Rock Business Improvement Association presented a plan to council back in January for temporary free parking around the pier.

The area is known to struggle during the off-season and the damaged pier isn’t exactly helping matters.

On Monday, White Rock City Council gave the final approval.

Parking along White Rock’s waterfront is now free for two months until March 31st, 2019.

Council gave the final reading to amending the “Fees and Charges Bylaw, 2017, No. 2230, Amendment No. 2, 2019, No. 2285.”

A statement on the City’s website also noted that parking between Oxford Street and the Hump is restricted to a four hour maximum stay.

Alex Nixon, Executive Director of the White Rock BIA says it’s been difficult for members to make their lease payments.

“It’s just startling to see the damage to the pier, and I think that brought into focus some of the real challenges the businesses are facing,” he says.

The Association hopes temporary free parking will attract more traffic to businesses on Marine Drive.
