A new and unconventional awareness campaign organized by Vancouver Coastal Health has Vancouver Police and nightclub owners teaming up to warn patrons about fentanyl.
The decals are designed to show partygoers the dangers of fentanyl use and will be placed in nightclub bathrooms. They specifically warn that the toxic opiate can be cut with anything and that it does kill.
The campaign hopes to save lives and targeted nightclub washrooms because they are a common public place for recreational drug use where you never really know what substance you are taking in.
Fentanyl has been linked to at least 655 deaths in Canada since 2009.
Fentanyl is powerful and fast-acting narcotic used to treat pain and as a sedative. The synthetic opioid is typically used for severe pain or pain management after surgeries because it is similar to but more powerful than morphine. It has been commonly misused for its heroinlike effect – state of euphoria and relaxation. This effect works by the drug binding to receptors in concentrated areas of the brain where pain and emotions come from.
