Chilliwack Dairy Farm Charged With 20 Counts Of Animal Cruelty

Chilliwack Cattle Sales Company Ltd has become the first in BC to be charged with animal cruelty—with 20 counts being laid against the farm and seven of its employees.

The charges are based on a shocking video that was released about 18-months-ago, showing the farm animals being maliciously beaten and mistreated.

The BC SPCA said that 16 of the counts are in relation to cruelty against cows, and the other four are in relation to the mistreatment of a pigeon.

Marcie Moriarty, spokeswoman of the animal welfare organization said they received the video in June 2014—which showed graphic footage of cows being beaten with chains, canes and rakes, and being kicked and punched.

“We immediately launched an investigation into the case and recommended charges against the employees identified in the video and the company,” she added, in a statement.

Besides the former employees being charged—the Crown has also held the company and its directors accountable for the disturbing incident.

Moriarty mentions that this in the first time a BC company has been held accountable for acts of animal cruelty on a farm.

As mentioned in the release: “Maximum sentences for each count under the PCA Act is a fine of up to $75,000, up to a two-year jail term and up to a lifetime ban on owning animals. Employees charged under the Wildlife Act, could face on a first conviction, a fine of up to $100,000 or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding one year, or both.”

As previously reported on by 604 Now—a Langley puppy mill and an animal breeding and boarding facility in Surrey are currently being investigated by the SPCA on counts of animal cruelty.
