You’ll have to enjoy those cherished root beer floats without a plastic straw in the near future.
A&W has announced that it’ll eliminate the use and distribution of plastic straws by the end of the year.
They will instead offer customers the option of using paper straws, which are 100 per cent “biodegradable, compostable and are sustainably sourced.”

The company also clarified that the paper straws can last 2 to 3 hours in a drink before breaking down. While, the paper straws will cost A&W more to purchase, customers will not see menu prices increase.
The announcement was made at the Vancouver Aquarium on World Oceans Day and mentioned how the move away from plastic straws will keep 82-million of them out of landfills each year.
In May, the City of Vancouver approved a ban on single-use straws as well as polystyrene foam cups and containers. The move is part of a comprehensive zero waste strategic plan: the Zero Waste 2040 Strategic Plan.
This ban comes into effect on June 1st, 2019.
