You might be receiving a payment very soon if you bought a car with fixed-priced auto-parts.
Approved in 2023, courts in Ontario, B.C., and Quebec passed settlements for 23 class action lawsuits totaling $78 million. The lawsuit alleged that some auto-part markers fixed their prices, resulting in car manufacturers, businesses, and car buyers to be cheated.

The parts include a vast variety, including braking systems, ignition coils, air conditioners, and door latches. These parts were reportedly installed in new vehicles over 18 years.
WHICH BRANDS ARE AFFECTED BY THE LAWSUIT?
Affected consumers and businesses can receive $25 per claim in compensation if they bought or leased new vehicles from July 1, 1998 to September 30, 2016. The brands and relevant periods include:
- Aston Martin: Jan 1, 2000 to Jun 30, 2014
- BMW/Mini Cooper: Jan 1, 2000 to Dec 4, 2014
- Chrysler/Dodge/Fiat/Jeep/Ram: Jan 1, 2000 to Jul 31, 2015
- General Motors (Buick/Cadillac/Chevrolet/Daewoo/GMC/Hummer/Isuzu/Oldsmobile/Pontiac/Saab/Saturn): Jul 1, 1999 to Jul 31, 2015
- Honda/Acura: Jul 1, 1998 to Sept 30, 2016
- Jaguar/Land Rover: Jan 1, 2000 to Jun 30, 2014
- Mazda: Jul 1, 1998 to Dec 14, 2014
- Nissan/Infiniti: Jul 1, 1998 to Sept 30, 2016
- Subaru: Jul 1, 1998 to Sept 30, 2016
- Toyota/Lexus: Jul 1, 1998 to Sept 30, 2016
- Volkswagen/Audi/Porsche: Jan 1, 2000 to Dec 4, 2014
- Volvo: Jan 1, 2000 to Jun 30, 2014
The law firm notes that “no wrongdoing is alleged against the Automakers. They are not defendants in these class actions.” Also, it is important to know that the vehicle itself is not being recalled. It is just the auto-part makers that are being alleged to be part of a conspiracy to fix prices.
Payments are beginning to be sent out on August 28 via e-transfer or cheque to approved claims. If you previously made a claim, then you should keep an eye on your email or mailbox for your portion of the settlement.
