A recent atmospheric river has brought a deluge of rain to the Lower Mainland, but especially Abbotsford as it is currently experiencing a wave of flooding. The city has already issued a number of evacuation orders for parts of the region, but these are now growing as the floodwaters are continuously pushing forward.

Evacuation Orders In Abbotsford: Flooding

The initial Evacuation Order announced by the City of Abbotsford came on December 10, 2025 as the region declared a State of Local Emergency.

371 properties in Sumas Prairie West are currently under an Evacuation Order, and an Evacuation Alert remains in place for 1,069 properties in Sumas Prairie East and West due to predictions that the Nooksack River would crest near the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s major flood stage.

The evacuation order has now been extended as the floodwaters from the Nooksack River have started crossing into Abbotsford. This includes 82 properties in Huntingdon Village, up to 2nd Ave. and Sumas Way.

“Based on the latest data, this flooding event is tracking similarly to the 1990 flood, which was a lesser event than 2021,” says the information bulletin.

Affected Families, Farmers, and Roads

This week’s atmospheric river has brought about enough major flooding to cut off many of the major highways leading from Metro Vancouver into the Interior. Affecting not only motorists, Abbotsford residents and farmers have also been weathering the storm.

“A total of 15 families spent the night at the Reception Centre at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre,” which remains open to provide immediate shelter to residents impacted by the evacuation orders.

Farmers have also been working through the night to remove any livestock from the area. “A total of 165 farming operations with livestock are currently in the evacuation area, 66 of those under Evacuation Order.”
