Richmond’s history is deeply rooted in the fishing, agriculture, aviation and shipping industries. To this day—there is a strong feel for all of those elements throughout the city.
Richmond was first incorporated as a municipality in 1879 and was officially designated as a city in 1990.

The fishing industry attracted a lot of Japanese fishermen to the area. The cannery and boat building industries also brought in a number of migrant workers. Steveston was known for being at the core of the fishing industry. Throughout the years, they have kept their ties with the sea and grown to be a popular tourist destination—as well as a local favourite.

Richmond was and still is known as being the centre of aviation across the province. In 1910, the first flight in B.C. took off from Minoru Racetrack. Vancouver’s first airport was located on Richmond’s Lulu Island.
