British Columbia has just introduced legislation that would allow ICBC to cancel any parents drivers license that owes over $3000 in child support.
If the new legislation goes into effect, a parent will have thirty days to set up a payment plan or pay off the existing support payments before their license gets cancelled.
This would create a way to enforce overdue payment and encourage negotiation towards payments.

This new act has sparked some controversy within the community, with people stating that ICBC shouldn’t get involved.

ICBC has nothing to do with child support and should not be involved! Losing the ability to get to work does not help them pay child support! Or have wages to garnish.

Hopefully @icbc and @bcndp can read! And pay attention to what their citizens say! ICBC student loan repayment, child support, mortgages, real estate investors, HOW ABOUT CONCENTRATE ON INSURANCE!

Currently, the FMEP (Family Maintenance Enforcement Program) can ask ICBC to refuse the issuing or renewal of a license of someone who has an outstanding amount of payments due.
Since the beginning of FMEP in 1998-1999, over $3.6 billion has been paid to 140,000 families and children. About 70,000 parents are currently enrolled in the FMEP program.
The new legislation would also include changes within the Land Titles Registry, no longer requiring parents to file an entire court order. It would instead be a simplified, streamlined process that would require submission of pertinent information only.
If this bill goes through, it will go into effect within the next 60 to 90 days.
