NASA’s primary objective within this job post is not only to obtain a candidate concerned with the welfare of planet earth, but also of the universe at large.
The job posting itself reads:
“Nasa maintains policies for planetary protection, applicable to all space flight missions that may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies, and any mission employing spacecraft, which are intended to return to Earth and its biosphere with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration.”
Evidently, NASA takes the contamination of other planets and celestial bodies very seriously. Space exploration could have very adverse effects elsewhere, and they want someone in this role who takes pride in maintaining this mandate of universal peace and protection. (Star Trek, anyone?)
