A massive “W” sculpture has been raised on the New Westminster waterfront, on the east end of the Timber Wharf at Westminster Pier Park, clearly visible from the skytrain bridge connecting New Westminster and Surrey.
The impressive art piece was designed by Brazilian artist José Resendé, and is said to be the largest of the 2014-2016 Vancouver Biennale installations. It is also the largest site specific outdoor art installation in Canada.
The sculpture is made out of four forty foot high cube shipping containers cantilevered into the shape of a “W”. It weighs 15.4 tonnes and stands about 140 feet high.
WOW New Westminster uses steel cables as tie beams to ensure the shipping containers remain balanced. The art piece reflects New Westminster’s historic roots as a shipping, transportation, and industry hub in British Columbia.
WOW New Westminster is one of three new art installations in New West, but will be the only one that remains after the Biennale is over.
Hugo França’s Public Furniture | Urban Trees is situated on the waterfront esplanade between Reliance Court and Renaissance Square. Konstantin Dimopoulos’s The Blue Trees is also in Pier Park, on Royal Avenue, and near City Hall.
