The election results are in, and the B.C. Conservatives have taken the win. With them comes a plethora of promises during their campaign, including a major pledge of a SkyTrain extension to Newton— something that residents have been waiting many years for.

Now, Surrey may finally get its SkyTrain extension as long as those promises are upheld.
SkyTrain Extension to Newton
Both the NDP and B.C. Conservatives made pledges for the extension to Surrey’s voter-rich city in hopes of garnering more support, announcing their promises mere days before the provincial election. Although each issued news releases on October 20, it was still the Conservatives who got the win in the end.
In their press release, the Conservatives wrote,
Surrey is growing into one of British Columbia’s largest cities, and its rapid growth demands transportation infrastructure that keeps pace. Newton is a major and growing urban centre, home to thousands of families, small businesses and workers who depend on King George Boulevard every day. Yet the community has been left at the back of the line for rapid transit for years.
The release does not mention any timeline nor price point for the extension. Although, it does speak on the scrapped 2018 plans for the light rail to Newton, and how eight years later, Newton residents are still left waiting for the project to take off under the NDP government.

“Families in Newton shouldn’t have to keep waiting on promises that never get delivered,” said Lorne Doerkson, the now premier-designate of B.C. “This community has been patient for far too long. I’m committing to this project now, and a Conservative government will build it on time and on budget.”
While the project is still technically up in the air, the Conservatives now have a chance to fulfill a long-awaited promise that many Newton residents have been wanting.
