Quite often students complain that university doesn’t allow them to take their knowledge outside of the classroom. However SFU’s Project Management course, BUS 361, gives students the chance to put their knowledge to the test, and to do so for a good cause.
Divided into 9 teams, each group had to design their own fundraising event, with one ultimate goal: raise $25,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Three events have already occurred: the “Hands Up!” club night fundraiser, which raised $2,550, the “Pie Your Prof” fundraiser, which raised $2,204.87, and the “Seymour Grand Prix”, whose donations amount has yet to be counted. The remainder of the money raised thus far, has been through various online or in-person donations, and through sales of wristbands.
Want to Help These Students Reach Their Goal? Check out each of the remaining events:
From now until November 18th, if you are around SFU ’s Burnaby campus, you can stop by the 25toLife booth in the Academic Quadrangle or in West Mall Complex to participate in the “Jellybean Jar Contest.” For a $2 donation you can guess how many beans are in the jar, and if you are correct you can win all of the jellybeans!
On November 7th from 11AM – 2PM head out to Harbour Centre for “Stepping on Cancer.” Once you’ve paid the $25 registration fee, you can climb the stairs to Harbour Centre’s observation deck with other members of the community, including RCMP officers and varsity athletes. This is a chance to be active and help raise money for research on childhood cancers!
On November 15th starting at 9PM make your way to Venue Nightclub for “Dance for a Cause.” For just $10 you can enjoy one of Vancouver’s hottest Friday night parties, featuring cheap drinks and great music! If you’ve ever wondered about Venue’s WTF! Fridays before, this weekend is the time to go! *Must be 19+*
On November 16th from 6PM to 1AM eat and mingle with friends, both old and new, at WINGS Restaurant and Pub in Burnaby. Tickets are $20, and each gives you either 1lb of wings or a gourmet burger, AND your choice of drink! There will also be a raffle for various prizes, so be sure to bring money to purchase raffle tickets! *Must be 19+*
On November 18th from 11AM – 4PM, if you are in need of a haircut you are in luck! At SFU ’s Surrey campus “Charitable Cuts” will be held, where $50 gets you a haircut, a raffle ticket, and access to the photo booth so you can take pictures of your new look! If you aren’t up to participating you can always purchase raffle tickets separately, giving you a chance to win prizes including Canucks and BC Lions tickets!
On November 19th starting at 4PM participate in a speed-networking event with industry professionals at SFU ’s Harbour Centre. This is a great way to make valuable connections, and due to the event’s format, you are guaranteed to have interactions with several professionals throughout the event!
