World War II Bomb Shell Safely Removed From Stanley Park

Top 10 Summer Attractions for Tourists In Vancouve

A Vancouver man in search of buried treasure at Stanley Park came across something unusual Thursday when the beeper on his metal detector went off.

The Vancouverite, who visits Stanley Park often, contacted the VPD after he found a mortar shell in the forest near HMCS Discovery that reportedly dates back to World War II.

The VPD’s explosive disposal unit was immediately called on site to x-ray the shell and determine if it’s a live round. Fortunately, x-rays were inconclusive.

The bomb squad has transported the bomb shell to Chilliwack, where it will undergo further examination and be disposed.

Given it was found near HMCS Discovery, its highly possible the shell was apart of a training round. HMCS Discovery is a Royal Canadian Navy Reserve. It was created during World War II and used for recruitment and training.
