Although an extremely rare occurrence, a Vancouver shark sighting happens every now and again. What’s more, these sightings even take place in the shallow waters close to popular beaches.
At approximately 8:30 AM on Monday, June 18th, Kate White was enjoying a morning walk when she spotted something unusual. She was walking along Kitsilano beach when she spotted a dorsal fin piercing through the water.
After the encounter, White took to Twitter to describe her experience and an image of the fin.
“If you look closely you can see the heron, the seal, and the baby shark on my morning walk,” she wrote.
In addition, she told 604 Now that she thought the shark seemed to want to stay in that area.
“So I wondered if it were not in the right place because the waters are getting warmer,” she said. “Or if there might have been something good to eat there because there was also a seal and a heron hanging around.”
Vancouver Shark

It isn’t always discussed, but a vast array of sharks frequent the waters of BC. In fact, even elusive species, such as the mysterious basking shark, make appearances. With that in mind, these sightings usually take place off of the coasts, in far deeper waters.
And, while there are numerous places to dive in British Columbia, few grant encounters with these magnificent beasts. With that in mind, there are a couple of places that afford the opportunity to swim right alongside them in the open waters.
