Vancouver Aquarium Names Penguins After B.C. Cities

Vancouver Aquarium’s newest residents, the African penguins have finally been given names, after a contest held in June where more than 600 people submitted poems, artwork and videos to nominate their local communities as a name for penguins.

The name’s given mean more than just a dot on the map. Hope and Nelson made the list, by connecting to South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and a hope of a brighter future for the endangered African penguins.

Tofino and Lillooet were found to be fitting names, due to Tofino’s fit for the surf loving animals, and the Lilloeet Nation’s call to preserve nature.

Among the above, Seachelt, Stevenson and Salt Spring we’re among other B.C. town inspired names for the new residents. Winners of the contest received a one year pass, and a VIP meet and greet with the penguins!
