The Great Gatsby Movie Inspires a Vancouver Pop-Up Restaurant

While Baz Lurhmann’s film version of The Great Gatsby is scheduled to open on May 10, a Vancouver restaurant is presenting its own version of the movie. Two Chefs and a Table is bringing a pop-up restaurant called The Gatsby to its downtown location on Alexander Street (they have another resto in Richmond).

The Gatsby will pay tribute to the era of the Roaring Twenties for three weeks beginning Wednesday, April 17. The restaurant and menu will be transformed with both decor and authentic dishes from the ’20s.

This isn’t the first journey into another time and place for the restaurant. During the past two years, Two Chefs and a Table has hosted popular Prohibition theme dinners. Once again, the restaurant’s culinary team will recreate famous and forgotten dishes and drinks that will be served in the intimate bistro.

The restaurant will be transformed via lace, linens, candles and silver punch bowls supplied by A&B Partytime Rentals. Blackout curtains will complete the speakeasy feel and period music will set the mood.

Chef Karl Gregg, passionate about cuisine from that bygone era, has put together a menu that includes such classic dishes as Roasted Duck, Steak Tartare, Salmon Wellington, Waldorf Salad, Croquettes and Duchesse Potatoes. Guests will be offered such period drinks as punch and martinis (shaken), all served table side. Three and five-course set menus will be offered along with a la carte options. The popular Chef’s Table, the centerpiece of the room, can accommodate groups of up to 10 diners.

Gregg said the period dinners the restaurant has done in the past have been some of the restaurant’s most popular events — but they wanted to do more with both the room and the menu. “By doing this as a pop-up, we’re able to spend even more time and energy transforming the bistro into a tribute to the era.”

The Gatsby will run Wednesday-Saturday nights for three weeks beginning April 17, wrapping up on May 4, 2013. Reservations are available by calling 778.233.1303.
