Richmond is going the extra mile to ensure pet safety in the city.
Earlier this month, Richmond’s Fire-Rescue team purchased pet oxygen mask kits to bring along for future fire emergencies. The masks cost $90 each and have been assembled into two kits with a total of three different sizes in each bag. Emergency responders will carry these kits in their firetrucks.
According to the Fire-Rescue team, pets naturally hide as opposed to running when they see a big fire which ultimately leads to them inhaling a lot of smoke. The new masks will help aid pets and help them from smoke asphyxiation.
The city of Richmond has a high pet population which currently consists of nearly 5,200 licensed dogs and cats.
“Pets are always considered part of the family. When we can actually help to bring the pet back, the owners are definitely grateful.” says Deputy Chief Kim Howell
