Gastown isn’t just Vancouver’s original downtown core but it’s also a national historic site. The area is rich in history from Hastings Mill to Woodward’s and the Great Vancouver Fire to the Great Depression. It’s named after “Gassy” Jack Deighton who opened the area’s first saloon.
Gastown is often described as a trendy tourist area with a mix of vintage and contemporary. There’s hip nightlife and upscale housing alongside old design and poverty as the boundaries lie adjacent to the Downtown Eastside.
