The City of Vancouver has just announced it has made four previously temporary neighbourhood plaza spaces into permanent fixtures. turning them into “year-round destinations.”

“Every neighbourhood deserves safe, welcoming spaces where families, seniors and residents of all ages can gather, connect and feel at home,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “These plazas are part of our commitment to building more livable, affordable, and vibrant communities across Vancouver.”
Permanent Plaza Spaces in Vancouver
Located in Cambie Village, South Granville, Hastings-Sunrise, and Mount Pleasant, these spaces were originally introduced as temporary public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the areas have become popular gathering places; and in 2023, the City started to upgrade the spaces into permanent public plazas with community support.
According to the City, the plazas and nearby streetscape improvements are part of a combined investment of $14.5 million. Here’s the breakdown:
- $10 million from the Province of British Columbia
- $3.3 million through the City’s 2023-2026 Capital Plan and Uplifting Communities Fund
- $1.2 million from the Government of Canada
Plaza Layouts
The plazas were reportedly designed with community members and local stewardship partners, with a focus on making these spaces for everyday gathering, celebrations, cultural events, and neighbourhood planning.
Visitors will be able to see layouts that support gatherings; improved lightning, as well as walking and cycling connections; built-in seating, upgraded furniture, drinking fountains, and water access; and new trees and planting areas.
