The Canada 150 Mosaic
As a marker of Canada’s 150th birthday, 150 individual community murals, painted by Canadian residents, will form a cultural mosaic. This new art piece can span the length of two football fields and reach heights up to 8 feet.
In addition to 80,000 individually painted tiles, each community mural made up of 450-750 tiles will comprise of a much larger image of train carts connecting all Canadian provinces and territories by rail.
The good news is, anyone, whether a professional artist or not, can participate in this unifying project. 5-15 communities in each province and territory will have the opportunity to paint sections of the mosaic. Community members will paint a tile using inspiration of something that reminds them of their community. The tiles will form each individual community mural which will then connect to other murals painted throughout the nation. When linked to other paintings across the country the individual mural sections become single pages in a storybook of many.

The Meaning
The Canada 150 mosaic is a community forming installation. Its purpose is to unify Canadians across the country through art, while capturing the nation’s historic and cultural story. As a treasured piece representative of Canada, the Canada 150 Mosaic will stand permanently in New Westminster for decades to come as a painted time capsule representing community memories and key Canadian moments.
When admiring the New West mural, it is important to remember that each individual tile has a purpose and story behind it. This not only links it to the New Westminster as a community but also to a much bigger picture, that picture being, all of Canada.
