Vancouver City Council has just approved a massive, 33-storey hotel that will be located on Granville Street and Davie Street in downtown Vancouver. Situated on the northwest corner of the intersection, it will be replacing a number of old commercial buildings as the area is redeveloped into the hotel.

Unanimous Approval For The New Hotel In Downtown Vancouver

The approval came at a public hearing on Thursday, January 15, where city councillors unanimously approved the proposal, which was put forward by Cattell MacKey (MCM) Partnership. The application also gained support from the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, as well as Destination Vancouver. Both organizations had submitted letters, supporting the project during its first 2023 proposal.

The project plans to add 464 new hotel rooms to the Granville Entertainment District, effectively more than doubling the current hotel capacity there. According to the application booklet, “through expanding the hotel inventory and providing additional commercial space, the proposal would not only enhance the visitor experience on Granville Street but also contribute to the overall growth and development of Vancouver’s tourism, cultural and entertainment sectors.”

But the project was and is not without its opposition. Reportedly, the city received 13 pieces of correspondence that opposed the hotel. The concerns ranged from the building’s height to the addition of hotel rooms rather than homes in the area.

As of now, the hotel is slated to be 110 metres tall and nearly 400,000-sq.-ft. A hotel lounge and bar is also part of the proposal, which can be accessed from the street, as well as 6,847-sq.-ft. of restaurant space.
