Metro Vancouver’s iconic McBarge is set to receive new life and open for business in a new mystery location.
The former floating McDonald’s restaurant first made its debut in False Creek during Expo 86. While initially a hit, it was eventually abandoned and has since spent its time anchored in the Burrard Inlet in North Burnaby.
In an interview with CBC, owner Howard Meakin revealed that the McBarge is about to set sail for a new life in a secret location. When asked if that location could be in Vancouver, Meakin replied “it’s possible”.
The 57-metre-long barge will finally leave North Burnaby early this week with the help of two tugboats and an escort vessel. It’s first stop will be in Maple Ridge for a $4.5 million restoration, and then eventually set sail to be reopened in an unrevealed location in B.C.
