On his way to pick up a light bulb, Mehrdad P.’s route took him near a gas station. He decided to stop in, where he checked his lottery tickets with a self-scanner. It was there that he learnt he had just won $1-million.

Immediately, he left and went back home to share the news with his wife.

“She said, ‘you are acting weird’ and I told her, ‘I am weird’,” said Mehrdad. “I told her I won $100,000, but later we checked on the [BCLC] Lotto! App and saw it was one million!”

With the windfall, Mehrdad plans to take his family on a “dream holiday,” but he’s also taking his time to consider all his options.

“I’m super excited. I can’t describe it,” Mehrdad said.

The winning ticket was bought at the Smart Shop in an Esso Station on Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue in Burnaby.

Other Lottery Wins

It’s an exciting time for lottery players right now as there is currently an unclaimed $40-million ticket floating around Canada. While this ticket wasn’t sold in B.C., there’s still a chance it may be in your pocket if you’ve travelled to Ontario in the last year.

The ticket’s winning numbers were pulled on October 28, 2025 from a Lotto Max draw, which means that whoever owns the ticket needs to act fast as they a little more than a week left to claim their prize. As for the winning numbers, they were 06, 14, 17, 19, 26, 43, 45, alongside bonus number 27.

A similar situation happened not long ago in Metro Vancouver. A winning $32-million ticket was sold in Surrey but had yet to be claimed. About a week later, Surrey resident Amritpal S. was named the winner of the Gold Ball Jackpot from the September 19, 2026 Lotto 6/49 draw.
