Hollywood Studio Skydance Media Coming to Surrey

Surrey is poised to grow its Klout as a Metro Vancouver film and television hub.

Already this year, the city has issued 60% more filming permits than the same period last year. That includes film, television and commercials. Now the BC film industry is getting another push forward with a major Hollywood studio slated for the Newton area of Surrey.

Skydance Media will set up shop in Kennedy Heights at the old Pacific Newspaper building with a state-of-the-art five-stage sound studio for their film and television productions.

The complex will employ up to 400 people when running at full capacity. The California production company is based out of Paramount Pictures, their co-producing and co-financing partners, in Hollywood.

Skydance is known for the 2010 remake of True Grit, the last two installments of Mission: Impossible and World War Z. Their upcoming films include Star Trek Beyond, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, World War Z 2, Geostorm and The Hitman’s Bodyguard.

They also produce original programming for Netflix in a production deal lasting the next eight years. Currently for Netflix they produce Grace and Frankie and are slated to lead this fall’s Altered Carbon.

The city expects Skydance to bring in around $100 million in economic revenue when at full production every year. There is also interest from other parties interested in opening up other studios in the city.
