Alberni and Thurlow streets will be getting a major makeover. Concord Pacific Ltd. is planning on building a high-end retail centre at the corner of Alberni Street and Thurlow Street in Downtown Vancouver.

The centre will be called the Carlyle Complex, and shops that are rumoured to be opening up are global diamond mining company De Beers, New York based designer Tory Burch, French fashion house Christian Dior, and many other high end brands. New restaurants will also be added to the Carlyle Complex.

These businesses will be joining the other high-end retailers already in place on Burrard Street, such as Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., and Coach. The district on Alberni Street that runs from Burrard to Thurlow has become one of the city’s most expensive areas for high end shopping.

The executive director of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, Charles Gauthier, says that the City of Vancouver should be investing money into widening the sidewalks on Alberni Street, and adding extra benches and other kinds of street furniture, to encourage shoppers to want to use the area not just for shopping, but also for a place to hang out.

The building that was in this location previously held a 7-Eleven, a community college, and a Dollar Tree Canada.

Gauthier also says, “It’s a street-level experience that I think people really crave in the downtown area. Alberni Street has the potential to become something that we’ve never seen before.”

Many are citing that Alberni Street will be the equivalent to Los Angeles’s Rodeo Drive.
