Health Tips: Reduce The Appearance Of Scars

Everyone wants to have flawless skin, whether it be on their face or any other part of their body; but sometimes scars can get in the way.

After a wound, a fibrous tissue replaces the normal skin, and this results in a scar. Once the skin has healed after the wound this is when a scar begins to appear. There are different ways that scars can appear, some of which include: surgery, acne, and weight gain.

So what are some methods to diminish and improve the look of scars you might wonder?

Some general things which can help reduce the appearance of scars are:

  •   Hydrating the scar: When the skin cells are damaged, they have a harder time retaining water as well as normal skin cells do. By keeping the skin cells hydrated, this helps to reduce the appearance of the scars. Drinking lots of water, tea-tree oil, and bio-oil are just a few examples of some things which you can use to hydrate your skin.
  •  Anti-inflammatory products: When the skin is damaged inflammation occurs in the infected area; so by reducing inflammation this will help prevent and reduce the appearance of scars. There is no specific anti-inflammatory cream, but there are many foods which have anti-inflammatory properties. For example, foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids (nuts, canola oil, etc), fruits, vegetables, and protein (chicken, fish, etc), are all types of foods which can help reduce inflammation, thus helping the appearance of the scar.
  •  Exposing your skin to high temperatures: When scar tissue forms it consists of collagen, and if collagen is broken down then this will also help break down the scar tissue . At high temperatures, an enzyme which breaks down collagen is activated which reduces the look of scars. Anything that will make you sweat will help reduce the appearance of scars, such as sitting in a steam room or exercising.
  •  Oxygen flow: When oxygen flow increases within the blood, this causes the skin tone of the scar to become lighter .The way to increase oxygen flow to the skin, is to get the blood circulating. Exercising, getting a body massage, eating foods high in vitamin c, and decreasing cholesterol levels are all methods which can help increase blood circulation.

1. A natural method which can help diminish the look of scars, is in taking vitamin E, either by taking it in it’s pill form or by rubbing it (in the form of a lotion or oil) onto the scar. Some foods to consider which contain vitamin E are tomatoes, nuts, and green vegetables. Vitamin E is a good antioxidant which is not only healthy for your skin, but is also beneficial for your heart and other bodily processes. How exactly vitamin E help’s to reduce the look of scars, is by helping blood circulate within the scar tissue, which helps reduce the discolouration of the skin caused by the scar. Even though vitamin E has shown to help prevent and reduce scaring, it is not that effective of a treatment and results are gradual and often time do not appear for a couple of months.

2. Silicone scar sheets are another option that have been proven the most effective in preventing scars, and also reducing the appearance of previous scars. These sheets contain silicone, which at the moment is the best ingredient out there for preventing and reducing scars. So far, what research has shown is that the silicone hydrates, acts as an anti-inflammatory, and provides warmth and oxygen to the scar. Silicone sheets have been proven very effective and are used by many surgeons to help with scaring after surgeries. You can find silicone scar sheets at any drugstore, or you can even order them online! They usually start around $35, but prices may vary depending on brand and size.

These methods are straight forward and effective, if you realize you have a scar it’s best to deal with it immediately, after all, the last thing you would want is someone to name a movie after you..
