The long stretch of sunny weather we’ve hoped for is finally here, and it’s bringing the heat.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement that reports temperatures across the South Coast of British Columbia will climb into the low thirties over the next few days as a large ridge of high pressure is building along the coast.

The hottest day of the week is anticipated to be Thursday as the ridge reaches its peak strength, pushing highs of 32 degrees to the majority of metro Vancouver.

Temperatures along the water will be a little cooler and closer to 25 degrees.

The agency adds that the higher than normal temperatures are expected to last into the middle of next week.

It’s strongly advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, including thirst, dizziness, confusion, weakness and fainting/collapsing.

Recommendations include drinking plenty of water, spending several hours every day in an air-conditioned facility and avoiding sunburn by staying in the shade or using sunscreen with SPF 30 or more.
