According to a heartfelt post on Facebook, multiple seagulls were lured onto the train tracks at White Rock Beach at about 7pm on Sunday evening.
These birds were slaughtered and maimed by the oncoming train – two birds died and two had broken legs. The more alarming factor is that this seemingly deliberate act was carried out by a family of two adults and two kids.
Below is the public shaming accounting of the incident which includes a license plate #. The post has been shared thousands of times and comments discuss animal cruelty, murder and parenting. Public outcry is sure to lead to SPCA and City of White Rock’s bylaw enforcement involvement in the incident.
“To the family that lured a bunch of seagulls to the train tracks tonight at white rock beach at about 7pm (license plate number eb 0187 in a 2007ish tan chevy pick up – I hope you feel like hell – two parents with their two kids – purposefully lured birds to the tracks to be slaughtered and maimed – 2 birds died and 2 more had broken legs. What a terrible thing to do in the first place and what a horrible thing to teach your kids! You should be ashamed of yourselves Here is a picture of the 2 dead birds. Please forward this – animal cruelty is not acceptable. “
The seagull population has already taken a dive by 50 percent as marine food continues to drop according to UBC. This accounts for why seagulls have begun to eat garbage and earthworms found on land compared to mainly small fish and shellfish.
