Changes to The NEXUS Program

In a press release published on October 1, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) wrote that “applicants must schedule their NEXUS enrolment interview within two years of getting conditional approval” starting April 1, 2027.

Currently, the NEXUS program has a five-year time limit; this change brings back the original two-year rule.

“The timeframe was temporarily extended to five years due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now with more enrolment interview capacity available, the two-year deadline is returning.”

What Does This Mean for Applicants?

That depends on when you were conditionally approved.

If you received approval on or after April 1, 2027, then you have two years from your conditional approval to schedule your interview. And if you instead received approval before April 1, 2027, then you must schedule your interview within five years of your approval date, or by April 1, 2029. Whichever day comes first, that is your deadline.

For those waiting for an interview, you are advised book your appointment as soon as possible so that your application doesn’t expire.

The Interview Process

Conditionally approved applicants will be required to schedule an interview with both CBSA and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before they can receive their NEXUS card.

“The CBSA portion of the NEXUS interview is conducted at a NEXUS enrolment center, while the U.S. CBP portion may be completed at a CBP enrolment center or through Enrolment on Arrival,” CBSA explains. ” Interviews include identity verification, fingerprinting, and questions from both CBSA and U.S. CBP officers.”
