Here’s what you need to know about this upcoming benefit.

Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit

If you’re used to receiving it, then you’ll already know that the GST/HST credit is a quarterly, tax-free payment that “help[s]… individuals and families with low and modest incomes.” Canadians are automatically considered for the payment when they file their taxes. There’s no application or anything like that. As long as you’ve done your taxes, you’re already categorized as eligible or non-eligible.

The GST/HST credit has now been rebranded into the Canada Groceries and Essentials benefit. This new benefit “offer[s] higher payment amounts while keeping the eligibility and structure of the GST/HST credit.” The quarterly payments are expected to increase by 25% for the next five years.

  • The number of children under 19 years old you have who are eligible for the Canada child benefit, CGEB, or both

According to the federal government, your benefit amount is recalculated every July based on the information from your previous year’s tax return. For the period from July 2026 to June 2027, you could annually get up to:

  • $679 if you are a single individual
  • $890 if you are married or have a common-law partner
  • $234 for each eligible child under the age of 19
