If you’re looking for a spot in Vancouver that’s both a cafe and a bar, then Birds & The Beets Bar is the place for you.
The Powell Street location is a cafe by day and a “juice bar,” by night, but “juice” in this case is actually code for “wine.”
The spot serves salads, sandwiches, breakfast and of course coffee during the day with hours starting at 7 am and 9 am on the weekend.
But at the stroke of 6 pm, you can enter through the Alexander Street entrance to see the place transform into a bar with a selection of natural wines.
But do keep in mind that natural wines differ from what you may get at the liquor store. These wines are organic and can sometimes be more like kombucha or a sour beer.

Marino Colleoni’s zero SO2 rosato. Slightly sparkling. Mouthwatering acidity. All summer long at JB. Shout out to the Bistro boys for reminding us about this gem. @jessification @richardsonepaul #juicebaryvr #naturalwine #rawwine #rosato #brunello #marinocolleoni #sanssulphites #vinnaturel #sangiovese #realwine #vancouverbc #notdrinkingpoisoninvancouver
They are cloudier and usually made in smaller batches.
Wine Folly describes it best: “Think of it as wine unplugged. […] Of course, some natural wines are quite clean and fruity indeed. But if you taste a few, you’ll discover most lean towards the sour, yeasty end of the spectrum.”
Birds & The Beets Bar looks small and cozy from the front, but don’t be fooled. It opens up into a much wider space when entering from Alexander Street.
So if you’re curious about this fusion cafe-bar and what natural wine has to offer, it’s certainly worth a visit.
