On Saturday, May 26th, the three main escalators at SkyTrain’s Granville Station will close for a lengthy replacement project.
Entitled the “Granville Escalator Replacement Project,” the plan will replace the six aging escalators at the station.
In addition, the confined location of the escalators requires them to be built on-site piece-by-piece. As a result, the Seymour Street entrance will be closed until until the project is finished.
With that in mind, customers may access the station from the escalators and elevator at the Dunsmuir Street entrance. Here, new fare gates have been installed for the increased passenger volume.
Translink adds that the ambitious plan will take approximately 2 years to complete.

The escalators at Granville Station are over 30 years old, and carry a whopping 30,000 people per day. Also, they are the longest set of escalators in Metro Vancouver.
As such, customers are asked to allow for extra travel time. Alternatively, they should consider using Burrard or Stadium-Chinatown Station – a five to eight minute walk away.
With that in mind, every effort is being made to keep the station open for customers, but disruptions are expected. If multiple escalators at the Dunsmuir entrance aren’t running, there may be circumstances where the station must be closed for safety reasons.
